Last day in Peru

We awoke this morning knowing that this was to be our final day in Peru. As usual, the profs went out for early coffee, and the cafe was filled with colorfully frosted cakes for Mother's Day. Occasional random fireworks also signified the day. We all enjoyed a nice hotel breakfast and then set out on foot to explore Cusco.

We visited a Benedictine church that had been built atop and Incan the temple after the Spanish razed it. There were beautiful courtyards and gardens that retained many of the masterfully carved original Incan walls:



We walked through the sprawling, bustling Cusco market:




Many souvenirs were purchased! A short walk led to another great Peruvian meal (chicken soup with dried corn, stir fry rice with deep fried trout), and then to our hotel to repack. 

At 1:15PM local time we began our almost incomprehensibly long journey home. Flight #1 of 4 is a domestic flight from Cusco to Lima:

I'm going to end this blog entry here, while we are still happily aglow with warm Peruvian memories. I won't bespoil this entry with details of our difficult journey home!

But I will end on this note: every person on this trip, every student and every professor, is grateful to have had this opportunity. We all squeezed out every bit of learning and enjoyment and memories that we possibly could. I am so proud of every student for the effort they displayed and the enthusiasm that they unceasingly showed. I've never been prouder to have led a trip for New England College. Thank you all!

Day #1: Sunday May 4th, 2025 We met at New England College at 6:15AM, loaded up the van, and headed to Logan airport. Exotic animals, fed and eaten

 Monday May 6th, 2025 - Sacred Valley, Peru Greetings from the Sacred Valley! Today began with a very early rise to catch a 5:20AM shuttle to our 8:05AM flight to Cusco. Although a bit bleary eyed, everyone made it without complaint. We landed in Cusco, collected our bags, and were met by our new guides for the week: Lashira and our drive John. Cusco is located at 11,000 feet of elevation and is known to cause altitude sickness among newly arrived travelers. Almost all of us took the precaution of starting altitude sickness medication the day before, and will continue to take it during this part of the trip. The guide also provided us with coca leaf tea, chocolates, and candies all believed the help easy symptoms: Thus fortified, we drove into the Sacred Valley, rising up to 12,000 feet before rolling back down to 9,000 feet. In and around Lima, Peru

 5/5/2025: Lima, Peru Yesterday was a long travel day, lasting from around 6AM to around 11PM (local times). We arrived at the hotel, checked in, and slept well. Our day began with a 6:30AM buffet breakfast at the hotel. We ate on the balcony overlooking Lima: By 7AM, we loaded on to our bus with guide Renato and driver Walter: We drove about 90 minutes through heavy Lima traffic, through the Atacama dessert, to the village of Pucusana. This village is known as the hub of a family fishing industry. We walked along the docks, a bit overwhelmed by the colors and sights and sounds and smells, and divided into two small boats.
