On the way!

Day #1: Sunday May 4th, 2025

We met at New England College at 6:15AM, loaded up the van, and headed to Logan airport. Thank you to Prof. Mark Mitch for driving us! 




Through security, then to our gate for a short flight from BOS --> JFK:


We had a 2.5 hour layover at JFK and then our 8 hour flight to Lima:



And we're off!
I'll do my best to update ASAP from Peru. But I never know what the internet situation is going to be, so always assume that no news is good news. Feel free to leave a comment below, and I will make sure to pass it on to the students.. Adios!

 Monday May 6th, 2025 - Sacred Valley, Peru Greetings from the Sacred Valley! Today began with a very early rise to catch a 5:20AM shuttle to our 8:05AM flight to Cusco. Although a bit bleary eyed, everyone made it without complaint. We landed in Cusco, collected our bags, and were met by our new guides for the week: Lashira and our drive John. Cusco is located at 11,000 feet of elevation and is known to cause altitude sickness among newly arrived travelers. Almost all of us took the precaution of starting altitude sickness medication the day before, and will continue to take it during this part of the trip. The guide also provided us with coca leaf tea, chocolates, and candies all believed the help easy symptoms: Thus fortified, we drove into the Sacred Valley, rising up to 12,000 feet before rolling back down to 9,000 feet. In and around Lima, Peru

 5/5/2025: Lima, Peru Yesterday was a long travel day, lasting from around 6AM to around 11PM (local times). We arrived at the hotel, checked in, and slept well. Our day began with a 6:30AM buffet breakfast at the hotel. We ate on the balcony overlooking Lima: By 7AM, we loaded on to our bus with guide Renato and driver Walter: We drove about 90 minutes through heavy Lima traffic, through the Atacama dessert, to the village of Pucusana. This village is known as the hub of a family fishing industry. We walked along the docks, a bit overwhelmed by the colors and sights and sounds and smells, and divided into two small boats. We motored our way into the harbor and around and island to view the wildlife: We saw sea lions, boobies (blue-footed and Peruvian), Inca terns, Peruvian pelicans, blackish oystercatchers, black crowned night herons, neotropical cormorants, red-legged cormorants, gulls, and everyone's favorite: the Humboldt penguin (endemic to the South American coast served by t...
